Episode 91 - Names of Christ Meditation
Episode 91 - Names of Christ Meditation
Hello, my friends.
Welcome to the podcast.
I am so glad you are here.
This is the last podcast episode I will be publishing before the new year. I am going to be taking off some time to spend with my family but I wanted to share this one with you before Christmas as my gift to you.
This is a guided meditation called the Names of Christ Meditation. This is something that is perfect for this time of the year as we are getting closer to Christmas but I would say this can be used at any time you are wanting to feel more connected to the Savior. So, I invite you to let yourself be still and let the words of this meditation sink deep into your heart and mind so that you can focus on the Savior Jesus Christ.
You want to make sure you are in a quiet place where you are undistracted and not busy doing other things like driving. So if you need to pause this episode please do so and come back when you are ready to be still and able to fully embrace this experience.
First, I invite you to get into a comfortable position. You can either sit on the floor or in a chair with your back straight and tall. You can also choose to lay flat on your back on the floor. Whatever feels the most comfortable to you.
Next, I want to invite you to close your eyes and rest your hands in a comfortable position. They can gently rest on your knees facing up or down. If you are laying down, you can place them next to you facing up or down. You can also place them on your heart. Whatever feels the most comfortable to you and that will help you be in a place of receiving.
Then, I invite you to close your eyes and take a full deep breath in through your nose. Fill your lungs and your diaphragm full of air for 4 counts. 1 2 3 4. Feel your abdomen expand. Hold that breath for 4 counts. 1 2 3 4. Then exhale and push all the air out of your body for four counts 1 2 3 4. Let’s repeat that. Inhale 1 2 3 4. Hold 1 2 3 4. Exhale 1 2 3 4. Let’s repeat that one more time. Inhale 1 2 3 4. Hold 1 2 3 4. Exhale 1 2 3 4.
Now I want you to feel the ground beneath you. Feel the connection to the earth and how it pulls you to it. In this moment, I invite you to feel the safety and security that can be experienced here.
Now picture a golden thread coming up from the earth and going up through your body and coming out the top of your head and connecting you to heaven.
Let’s take another deep breath through the nose. 1 2 3 4. Hold that breath 1 2 3 4. Exhale slowly 1 2 3 4.
My hope with this meditation is to give you an opportunity to feel more connection with your Savior through the pondering of His many names.
Now, I want to invite you to picture in your mind the Savior at the beginning of his earthly ministry. He is walking along the shore of the sea of Galilee. It is in the evening and the sun is setting. The light is reflecting on the still water. As Jesus is walking along the shore he sees two brothers, Simon and Andrew. They are fishermen and they are casting their net into the sea. The brothers ask Him where He lives and He answers them, “Come and see.” All the disciples of Jesus were given this same invitation of “come and see.”
The fishermen were invited to set down their nets and to come and see.
The Savior’s simple invitation to those fishermen of “Come and see” (Matt 19:21) is still extended to us today.
It is stated in the New Testament in different ways.
“Come and follow me” (Math 19:21)
“Follow me” (Matt 16:25 JST, Nephi 31:12)
“Come after me” (Matt 16:25 JST)
“Come, follow me” (Luke 18:22)
Now I want to invite you to picture yourself as if you are one of those fishermen holding your net. Instead of fish, your personal net feels heavy and is full of your daily challenges. Things like time constraints, daily chores, work demands, worldly pursuits, feelings of pride, or other pressures can get caught in our nets.
There may also be beliefs stuck in your net that create feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, overwhelm, worry, shame, loneliness, or fear. Beliefs that all tie back to the idea that somehow you are not enough or your life isn’t enough. These beliefs are weighing your net down and are preventing you from really seeing the Savior for who He is or feel of His love. Elder Robert M Daines of the Seventy calls this spiritual face blindness.
In this moment feel the heaviness of your net. Do you feel it in your body, in your mind, in your heart?
Don’t be afraid of this heaviness. Acknowledge it. Have compassion for it. The heaviness you are experiencing is because you are not only trying to carry your net alone but you have filled your net with things that don’t serve you.
Now, imagine that you are one of the fishmen there with the Savior. You are on the shore with your heavy net. He invites you to set down your net and to come and see. He is beckoning you to come and see who He is and feel of His love.
Feel your hand release the load of the net you have been carrying. Feel your net settle at your feet. Feel yourself stand a little taller as you embrace the moment of relief from the lightening of your burden. Imagine yourself turning to face Him and really seeing Him. Seeing Him in a way you have never done before.
We are going to spend a few more minutes coming and seeing Him by some of His names. There are many names for the Savior found in scripture. I am going to share with you some of His names, where they are found, and what they mean. You may want to take some time later to do your own discovery and find even more for yourself. The names I share are not only titles of the Savior but qualities and characteristics of Him. As you ponder on each of these names, imagine the Savior showing up along the sea shore in your story as that. How could understanding and pondering the names and their meaning help you see Him? How can this help you invite Him into your story–into your life?
Luke 2:11 - For unto you is aborn this day in the city of David a bSaviour, which is Christ the cLord.

I AM - “He Who Is” or “He who brings being into being.” It also can be translated as Lord in small capital letters, Jehovah, or Yahweh. In Hebrew, Yahweh is formed from the four Hebrew consonants. In English. we see them written as YHWH.
“YH (inhale): WH (exhale).”
So a baby's first cry, his first breath, speaks the name of God. Each of us breathes the name of God.
Yah-weh.
Yah-weh.
Yah-weh.

Breath out The Lord of Lords
Breath in Wonderful
Breathe out Counselor
Breath in The Mighty God
Breath out The Everlasting Father
Breath in The Prince of Peace
Breath out The Amen.
As we end this Names of Christ Meditation, I invite you to choose one name that you need Christ to be for you today.
Continue to breathe in and out for a few more seconds feeling the power of that name of Jesus Christ moving through you. Filling you with His love, His power, His mercy, His hope, His strength, His compassion, His light, and His breath. Allow this to expand and settle within you. Take a moment to feel gratitude for who He is.
I believe that the more we turn to Him by coming and seeing, and focusing on His sacred names, we will know Him and see Him as He is.
